OEM vs ODM vs Contract Manufacturing: What Exhibitor Descriptions Reveal About Who Builds What?

OEM, ODM and contract manufacturing are listed together in the hundreds of pages of exhibitors at every expo; they determine which party has ownership of the design, the tooling and the final manufactured product. The terms OEM, ODM and Contract Manufacturing are used very loosely in the expo directories. A given term may be applied to an OEM in one sentence and to a contract manufacturer in the next. Some exhibits list all three of them in a single paragraph.
Therefore, a sourcing team would never waste their time booking a meeting with a material supplier thinking they were going to meet a contract manufacturer. That is why exhibitor information will save you money when attending an expo. Each exhibitor creates his/her own description for themselves. The verb or action words within that description tell you if they are using an OEM, ODM, or contract manufacturing business model.
This guide was created from the exhibitor lists of three upcoming shows, including Electronica Munich, which begins November 10th, 2026; COMPAMED, which begins November 16th, 2026; and MD&M West, which begins February 9th, 2027.
What Is the Difference Between OEM vs ODM and Contract Manufacturing?
OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer and ODM for original design manufacturer. In an OEM arrangement the brand owner supplies the design and the factory produces to it. In an ODM arrangement the factory supplies the design, and the brand owner adds its own name, features or packaging. JDM, joint design manufacturing, sits between the two: the customer and factory develop the product together. Contract manufacturing covers the factory side of any deal where one company produces parts or finished goods for another. Electronics profiles call that model EMS, short for electronics manufacturing services, and pharmaceutical profiles call it CDMO, short for contract development and manufacturing organisation.
Design ownership separates OEM vs ODM, and it also decides who holds the intellectual property: the buyer owns the design in OEM and EMS work, the factory keeps it in ODM work, and JDM partners share it. Process depth separates contract manufacturing from both. On the factory floor, OEM manufacturing and contract manufacturing are the same work seen from two sides: contract manufacturing describes outsourcing a process, and OEM describes who owns the specification. That overlap explains why one company can call itself an OEM manufacturer, an ODM partner and a contract manufacturer on the same web page.
Why Do Exhibitor Profiles Use OEM and ODM Wording Differently?
Listings follow no standard vocabulary. In the event exhibitor data reviewed for this guide, OEM carries two meanings. It names a customer type, meaning a company that buys components or equipment to build its own product, and it names a production capability, meaning build-to-specification manufacturing. A reader who misses the switch files companies under the wrong model.
The customer meaning shows up in event descriptions. The COMPAMED description lists OEM parts and solutions beside sensors, filters and tubing, which points to components sold to medical device makers. The capability meaning shows up in company profiles, covered next.
The letters ODM appear less often than design-and-manufacture wording. None of the key exhibitor profiles reviewed from the three expos uses the label, while several describe the work behind it.
Which Words in a Profile Point to OEM Manufacturing?
The capability meaning of OEM describes production to someone else’s drawing, and the OEM vs ODM split starts with who owns that specification. The useful phrases are bespoke, custom, short- and medium-run, to specification, private label and white label.
Bernic, one of the bespoke enclosure suppliers at Electronica Munich, supplies standard and bespoke enclosures for electronics and industrial sectors and adds laser engraving, milling and printing to the housings. It manufactures and assembles at its own facilities in Denmark. A & B Die Casting, listed among the contract molding and die casting suppliers at MD&M West, supplies fully finished and machined short- and medium-run die cast components and assemblies. Both build to a customer’s drawing, and both name the process and the run size.

How Can an ODM Manufacturer Be Identified From Product Categories?
An ODM supplier sells defined product families and lists the design work behind them. ACTRON, another Electronica exhibitor, says it assists clients across the product life cycle, from concept and design through prototyping to large-scale manufacturing and continued support. A catalogue of display and touch products combined with in-house design and prototyping is the ODM pattern: a brand picks a platform and the factory adapts it. White label and private label describe the simplest version of that route, where a brand puts its own name on an existing design.
Custom design work reads differently. Bay Cable, one of the custom cable and electronics manufacturers at MD&M West, designs and builds cable assemblies, wire harnesses and molded interconnects, from concept design through rapid prototyping to precision manufacturing. Eastprint, in the same list, describes itself as a custom manufacturer and designer of printed electronics and human-machine interface parts such as membrane switches and flexible circuits. Design shaped around each customer’s requirement reads as JDM-style work, and neither profile uses the term.
A search for the letters ODM would miss all three companies. A search for design verbs (designs, develops, engineers, prototypes) beside a product catalogue finds them.
What Does a Contract Manufacturing Profile Look Like?
Contract manufacturing profiles name a process and the industries served, and rarely a consumer brand.
Celestica, listed among the EMS companies exhibiting in Munich, describes integrated hardware design and manufacturing services and supply chain solutions for customers from cloud and communications to aerospace, healthcare and automotive. Advanced Powder Products lists metal injection moulding for components from prototype to high-volume quantities, with ISO 13485 certification for medical work. Flexan lists custom rubber moulding, liquid silicone rubber processing, extrusion and cleanroom assembly for medical device parts, with production sites in the U.S., China and Costa Rica.
At COMPAMED, Acrotec Medtech states the model directly: a collective of high-precision contract manufacturers. The profile sits among the medical contract manufacturers at COMPAMED.
Which Exhibitors Supply OEMs and Contract Manufacturers Without Being Either?
A keyword search for contract manufacturer returns two groups. One provides the manufacturing service. The other sells materials, components and tools to manufacturers.
Foster Corporation, one of the medtech material and component suppliers at COMPAMED, serves medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers with biomedical materials. Farnell, at Electronica, is a distributor of electronic and industrial components with a catalogue spanning more than 7,000 suppliers. DESTACO, at MD&M West, makes workholding and automation tooling for manufacturers in automotive, aerospace and consumer goods. All three sell into manufacturing, and none provides contract manufacturing.
The verb separates the groups. Supplies materials or distributes components marks a supplier, and manufactures to specification or provides assembly marks a manufacturer.

How Does Company Size Change What OEM and ODM Mean?
Once a profile is tagged, employee size shows whether the company can carry a project. A & B Die Casting has 21 employees on record and describes short- and medium-run work. Advanced Powder Products has 90 and covers prototype to high-volume quantities. Celestica has more than 15,000 and offers design, manufacturing and supply chain under one contract. The same OEM vs ODM wording means different things at those three sizes.
The employee size smart filter inside the API login dashboard groups records into bands from 1-10 employees up to 10,000+.
Which Well-Known Companies Fit Each Model?
The majority of public references to the ODM list include the same names. The top five notebook-producing ODMs (original design manufacturers) are Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec and their customers include HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Apple. Each of these companies provides a product under each other’s brands. While the customer type OEM has placed orders with these companies, none of the ODMs have a consumer brand of their own. Companies like Celestica and Sanmina are used as examples of EMS or Electronic Manufacturing Services. Since Celestica is listed on this year’s exhibitor roster at Electronica, I will also categorise them as a contract manufacturer. The categories of EMS and ODM do overlap. For example; Flex and Wistron act as both EMS providers and ODMs.
A company that designs, manufactures and markets its own branded products is called an Original Brand Manufacturer (OBM). This is typically the last search term referenced when searching OEM vs ODM vs OBM. It falls outside of the previously discussed factory-for-hire models.

Is ODM Cheaper Than OEM? Cost, Minimum Orders and Lead Time Compared?
ODM usually costs less to start and reaches market sooner, because the factory already owns the design. IBM lists lower development costs and faster time to market as the main ODM advantages. The trade-off is design control: the factory keeps the intellectual property unless the buyer explicitly buys it. OEM manufacturing reverses the balance. The buyer pays for design and tooling, controls the product and waits longer.
Exact numbers vary too much to quote as a rule. Marketplace buyer guides put OEM tooling anywhere from $2,000 to $50,000 or more and disagree widely on minimum orders and lead times, because the figures depend on the product category. Several of those guides also report that OEM unit prices drop below ODM prices at high volume, since the ODM price carries the factory’s design cost. Exhibitor profiles hold none of these numbers, so the OEM vs ODM cost answer for a specific product comes from a quote after the shortlist.
Which Model Fits a Product: OEM vs ODM or Contract Manufacturing?
The OEM vs ODM choice comes down to three questions, and the exhibitor description answers each one.
- Who holds the design? A company with finished drawings looks for OEM manufacturing or contract manufacturing partners and reads the profiles with bespoke, custom or named-process wording. A company with a concept and no engineering team looks for ODM or JDM partners such as ACTRON and Bay Cable, whose profiles run from concept to production.
- Which industry buys the product? A regulated product narrows the field, because descriptions name the industries served and the certifications held. Search the description for the standard the industry requires: ISO 13485 for medical devices, IATF 16949 for automotive, AS9100 for aerospace and IPC-A-610 for electronics assembly. Advanced Powder Products lists ISO 13485, and A & B Die Casting lists ISO 9001.
- How large is the run? Employee size separates short-run shops like A & B Die Casting from program partners like Celestica.
Which Upcoming Expos List OEM, ODM and Contract Manufacturing Companies?
| Event | Date | Location | Exhibitors on record | What the profiles show |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronica Munich 2026 | 10 to 13 Nov 2026 | Messe München, Germany | 3,653 | EMS, bespoke enclosures, concept-to-production display technology |
| COMPAMED 2026 | 16 to 19 Nov 2026 | Messe Düsseldorf, Germany | 756 | Contract manufacturers, medtech components, materials |

Electronica and COMPAMED run three days apart in Germany, and MD&M West follows in Anaheim in February. The same calendar lists more trade shows in Germany and trade shows in the United States.
The upcoming manufacturing trade shows page filters by industry, country, year and month, and the industry-wise trade show directory groups the catalogue by sector.
How to Build a Shortlist of OEM, ODM and Contract Manufacturing Companies in Four Steps
- Pick the event pool. Choose one or two expos from the table, or filter the events page. Electric & Electronics, Industrial Engineering, Medical & Pharma and Auto & Automotive are the industry filters closest to this topic.
- Tag each description. Design verbs mean ODM or JDM, bespoke or custom wording means OEM manufacturing, a named process beside customer industries means contract manufacturing, and supplies or distributes means supplier. That settles the OEM vs ODM question for each company. The downloadable exhibitor lists carry the description and employee size in the same record, so the tagging fits in one spreadsheet.
- Confirm the capability. A description summarizes the company, so the website field is the place to check a capability and a production site before a meeting is booked.
- Book meetings before the show. Booth number and contact job title turn the shortlist into a schedule, and the attendee lists of upcoming expos show who else will be on the floor.
Search terms worth running through the description field: OEM/ODM, OEM ODM, EMS for electronics manufacturing services, CDMO for pharmaceutical work, JDM for joint design, turnkey, build to specification, private label and white label.

What Should Be Asked at the Booth Once an Exhibitor Is Tagged?
The tag sets the first question. Each model carries a different risk, so each one needs a different opening at the booth.
| Shortlist Tag | Key Verbs & Phrases in Description | Recommended Opening Question at the Booth |
|---|---|---|
| OEM-Manufacturer | bespoke, custom, to specification, short/medium-run | “Which processes run in-house versus outsourced?” (Follow-up: Ask about tooling ownership and lead times for custom runs.) |
| ODM / JDM | concept-to-production, industrial design, designs and builds | “Which base designs already exist, and who owns the tooling post-production?” (Follow-up: Ask what modifications can be made for your brand.) |
| Contract-Manufacturer | [named service/process] + [customer industry] | “Which industry quality certifications do you hold, and what is your minimum run size?” (Follow-up: Verify ISO 13485, AS9100, or IATF 16949 compliance.) |
| Supplier / Vendor | supplies materials, distributes components, equipment for | “Do you offer contract production services, or strictly sell tools and raw materials?” (Follow-up: If strictly a supplier, evaluate them for your equipment list instead.) |
A tagged list changes how a show gets used. Meetings go to companies that match the product, and the supplier group becomes a separate list for anyone selling into manufacturing. Electronica Munich opens on 10 November 2026 with 3,653 exhibitors, and the Electronica Munich 2026 exhibitor contacts are the largest set in this guide to tag before the first booth visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is contract manufacturing the same as OEM manufacturing?
The two overlap. A factory that builds to a customer’s design does OEM manufacturing and contract manufacturing at once. The labels diverge in other cases. A factory that brings the design is an ODM, and one that co-develops the design with the customer is a JDM. Electronics profiles use EMS for build-to-specification work, and drug profiles use CDMO.
Can exhibitor descriptions be loaded into a CRM, and how fresh are they?
Yes. The exhibitor data API pulls records, including descriptions and employee size, into internal systems for tagging. The database updates weekly, each product page shows when its records were last verified, and the exhibitor data compliance policy explains how the data is collected.
